ALPACA, The Heart of the Andes
Honoring the soul of our Andean legacy
Every year, August 1st marks a date that goes far beyond celebration — it's a moment of reflection, gratitude, and reverence. At KUNA, we join this global recognition with deep respect and gratitude, because the alpaca is not only the origin of our fibers — it’s the beating heart behind every KUNA garment.
Alpaca is not only one of the world’s finest natural fibers — it’s also one of the most sustainable. Light on the land, gentle on the planet, and extraordinarily durable, alpaca offers a rare combination of elegance and environmental responsibility. A true example of nature’s intelligence.
A gift from the Andes
For thousands of years, the alpaca has thrived in the Andean highlands — deeply respected for its resilience and cultural significance. Valued by ancient civilizations and upheld by generations of Andean herders, alpaca has offered more than warmth: it has provided livelihood, identity, and tradition.
Its fleece — naturally insulating, breathable, hypoallergenic and available in over 22 natural shades — requires minimal processing and no chemical dyes. It’s one of nature’s most refined materials, offering conscious beauty and lasting performance.
Science with soul: Pacomarca
Located at over 4,000 meters above sea level in Puno, Pacomarca, our scientific research station, plays a vital role in protecting the future of the alpaca and the Andean ecosystem.
Across 1,500 hectares, Pacomarca hosts more than 2,500 selected alpacas and applies advanced techniques, from precision breeding and embryo transfer to ultrasound diagnostics, to improve fiber quality and animal well-being. All data is managed through Paco Pro, a proprietary system tracking over 2.5 million records on genetics, fiber traits, and health.
Pacomarca also leads Yanapaco, a conservation program focused on the rare black alpaca, representing less than 0.5% of the national herd. Through fair-trade purchasing, selective breeding, and herder training, the program ensures both preservation and community impact.
It is a place where science meets tradition, ensuring a sustainable and equitable future for alpaca — and for the people who keep its legacy alive.
The invisible thread
The alpaca connects us — past and future, nature and people, heritage and innovation. It is the silent thread that links artisans, shepherds, scientists, designers, and customers in a shared vision: one of timeless beauty, cultural integrity, and environmental consciousness.
Today, and every day, we say thank you
To the alpaca,
For its generosity.
For its quiet strength.
For reminding us that true luxury is not excess, but harmony.
